Men's Day - Report
International Men's Day is celebrated on 19 November. The Core Committee (elected on 18 November 2020) for the first time in PSA's history observed this day on WhatsApp and our other social media handles.
One of the core principles of the Political Science Association of Wilson College is to always accommodate intersectionality. In lieu of this, the PSA celebrated International Men’s Day on 19th November 2020.
Students, alumni, colleagues and friends were asked to write about their views on gender roles, men’s rights, their participation and portrayal in everyday society, etc.. The response was overwhelming and included articles full of sorrow, poems decorated in reality checks, and anecdotes that brought forward the plight of men in this overbearing, scrutinising culture.
The topic resonated across the board, eventually taking shape of WhatsApp forwards shared throughout the day by the Core Committee. As citizens of a country entrenched in patriarchy, Wilsonians, among others, came forward to talk about the inverse effect patriarchy has on men, as well as the crippling societal norms that they are brought up with. Appreciation was also showered unto these men, sharing feelings of warmth to those who chose to take painful trips down not only memory lanes, but also their presents.
Along with WhatsApp, the PSA also posted some of these pieces on their Instagram, Facebook and Twitter handle.
