Statement #1 of PSA 2020-21

The PSA released a statement on 30 November 2020 on the issue of farmers protest regarding the Farm Bills 2020.

The statement is as follows -

The Political Science Association of Wilson College aims to spread socio-political awareness, sensitising people and providing a platform for effective discourses and activities. We believe that dissent is an integral part of  democracy.

The Right to protest peacefully is enshrined in the Indian Constitution, which under

* Article 19(1)(a) guarantees the freedom of speech and expression

* Article 19(1)(b) assures citizens the right to assemble peacefully and without arms.

One must adhere to one’s duties and responsibilities in a democratic society.

The recent protests by farmers is of utmost and urgent importance. We are of the opinion that the government must talk and dialogue with the protesting voices.

We condemn the use of state brutality against peaceful protestors.

What can we as concerned citizens do -

1. Raise awareness.

2. Engage in active discourse with those who are affected. Get in touch with organisations and support bases that work on ground, to understand the issues at hand.

3. Disengage with misleading information and sources, and form narratives based on research and understanding of an issue from various perspectives.
